This Quintet was to be Schubert’s last completed work, written only weeks before his death during a period of rapidly declining health for the composer, aged only 31. Desperate to fill the void and secure his legacy in the world of music, in the final year of his life Schubert produced his most extraordinary compositions including the two piano trios, three piano sonatas, his last song cycle, and the exquisite String Quintet – his first and only work for this ensemble.
